Former Mizzou standout quarterback Chase Daniel used a Saturday morning press conference at Mizzou Arena to announce the creation of the “Chase Daniel Lone Star State Endowment Scholarship.”

The scholarship will be awarded annually to one recruit from the state of Texas, and preference will be given to athletes earning a grade point average above 3.0 and exhibiting outstanding community leadership.

Daniel, who is currently a backup quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, said creating the scholarship was something he “always wanted to do.” He said he hopes to give other athletes from Texas the same opportunity he had.

No details of the scholarship had been released prior to the press conference, as Daniel said he wanted to make the announcement in a formal setting. He had, however, hinted to former teammates about the scholarship announcement.

“I told J-Mac (Jeremy Maclin) and Danario (Alexander) to watch out for the announcement. Hopefully they’ll see it as something they want to do, too, but I beat them to the punch.”
