Missouri set to host SEC women’s tennis tournament

Missouri will host its first SEC women’s tennis tournament beginning Wednesday at the Mizzou Tennis Complex.

In only its second SEC season, coach Sasha Schmid said hosting the tournament is a very important event for the program.

“We‘re really excited about the tournament. It truly is the best tennis in the nation,” Schmid said.

The Tigers enter the tournament as the No. 13 seed after finishing the regular season with a 1-12 conference record. Missouri will look for its first SEC tournament victory against

No. 12 seed Arkansas. The two teams previously met on March 16 and the Tigers led 3-0 before the Razorbacks scored four consecutive singles points to win the match 4-3.

If Missouri were to beat Arkansas it would advance to face Texas A&M on Thursday.

The SEC is home to six teams in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association top 25 rankings with three more teams ranked in the top 50. The conference has 11 singles and doubles players in the ITA top 25 individual rankings.

Missouri Tigers to watch:

Cierra Gaytan-Leach: Gaytan-Leach is the No.1 singles and doubles player for Missouri. Gaytan-Leach finished the regular season 13-11 in singles and 10-11 in doubles, including a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 loss to the No. 1 singles player for Arkansas, Yang Pang.

Kelli Hine: As the No. 2 singles and No. 3 doubles player for Missouri, Hine finished the regular season 11-13 in singles and 7-11 in doubles.

Alex Clark: Having only appeared in eight matches this season, Clark is coming into the SEC tournament with consecutive singles victories against Mississippi State and UMKC.
