Missouri basketball signee Jakeenan Grant was named Georgia’s Mr. Basketball on Wednesday, March 5. The award is given by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
“I’m so excited for Jakeenan and his family,” said basketball coach Frank Haith in a news release sent out by Mizzou Athletic.
Gant is a 6-foot-8, 215-pound forward from Springfield, Ga. This season he averaged 21 points, 10.5 rebounds and four blocks per game. He helped lead Effingham County High School to a 20-10 record and a trip to the second round of the class AAAAA state playoffs this year.
Gant beat out several top players from around the state for the honor. Georgia is home to 14 players currently ranked in the Rivals Top 150 classes of 2014 and 2015.
“Our region continues to produce some of the deepest talent anywhere in the country,” said Eric Oberman, executive director of the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
Gant and Namon Wright, from Los Angeles, are the two signees in Missouri’s 2014 recruiting class.
Gant won’t be the only Mr. Basketball on Missouri’s roster next season. St. Louis native and Notre Dame transfer Cameron Biedscheid was named Mr. Show-Me Basketball for Missouri in 2012. Biedscheid will be eligible to play for Missouri at the end of the 2014 fall semester.
Gant will receive the award at the club’s Naismith Awards Banquet on Thursday, March 20.
