Nicole Hudson won the Southeastern Conference’s Player of the Week and Chelsea Thomas won Pitcher of the Week in the team’s first week of play in a new conference.
While neither player was nominated for the All-SEC preseason team, it didn’t stop them from rolling through competition in the Gaucho Classic. Missouri outscored its competition 43-7 en route to a 5-0 record and the tournament championship.
Senior third basemen Nicole Hudson led the Tigers on offense with five home runs, 11 RBIs and seven runs. Her .538 batting average is second on the team only to shortstop Corrin Genovese, who hit .636 in four games. Hudson also leads the SEC with a 1.833 slugging percentage and is second in home runs.
Last season, Hudson hit seven home runs in a full season with 61 games. She hit 13 home runs as a sophomore and 10 as a freshman.
Pitcher Chelsea Thomas was in top form, striking out 19 batters in 14 innings and posting a 0.00 ERA. The senior struck out 10 hitters against UC Santa Barbara including seven of the first nine she faced. She had nine Ks against Fresno State. Thomas also earned a 2-0 record and a shutout. (UCSB scored one unearned in her Sunday start.)
Hudson also appeared as a pitcher, something she has done since 2011. Hudson was shaky in the game against Fresno State. Although the Tigers won 11-3, she pitched all five innings of the run-rule shortened game, allowing three earned runs and striking out two. Hudson gave up two home runs to Fresno State freshman Stesha Brazil. The Webb City native also appeared in Mizzou Black & Gold softball game last week and gave up two earned runs in three innings pitched.
Hudson has now won Player of the Week three times in her career and Thomas has won Pitcher of the Week 13 times.
Missouri next faces Maryland in the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. The Tigers’ home opener is scheduled for Friday, March 8 against Texas A&M.
