Mizzou shuts out Auburn and South Carolina for their first SEC victories

Kaysie Clark (9) had a good weekend, scoring her second goal of season.

The No. 17 Missouri Tigers improved to 7-1 after picking up wins against Auburn on Friday night and South Carolina on Sunday to start Southeastern Conference play at 2-0. Mizzou shut out both teams, beating Alabama 2-0 and South Carolina 1-0.

Sophomore Kaysie Clark stood out this weekend as she made the first goal in the 29th minute against Auburn. This was her second goal of the season. In South Carolina, Clark attempted a 13-yard shot that barely missed the goal.

Haley Krentz, a senior, also scored her second goal of the season, making a 22-yard shot a few minutes after Clark in the Auburn game. The goal was assisted by sophomore Taylor Grant, marking her first assist of the year.

With two minutes left in the game, junior Dominique Richardson scored the only goal against South Carolina. The contest went back and forth for most of the match, but the Tiger offense came out strong in the second half, as the team got off six shots in the first 12 minutes. Missouri’s redshirt freshman goalkeeper McKenzie Sauerwein deflected two shots and recorded her fourth shutout of the season.

“South Carolina really put us through a tough test today, they were extremely hard to break down,” Missouri coach Bryan Blitz said. “That team will win a lot of games this year.”

The Gamecock’s loss lowered them to 3-3-2 and 0-1-1. The Auburn Tigers fell to 4-4 and 0-1.

Mizzou returns home on Friday, Sept. 21 to play against Ole Miss at 6:30 p.m. The Tigers then face Vanderbilt on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m.
