Tiger softball falls to Sooners in series closer, 2-1

By Kelsie Heneghan

The rubber match of the pivotal series between Missouri and Oklahoma softball proved to be another pitching duel between Missouri’s Chelsea Thomas and Oklahoma’s Keilani Ricketts. Just like in Game 1, Ricketts would get the win as her Sooners beat the Tigers 2-1.

The Sooners’ first run came off the bat of Ricketts to score Destinee Martinez in the first inning. Oklahoma brought the score to 2-0 in the second with a fielder’s choice by Javen Henson to score Callie Parsons.

The third inning was the Tigers’ turn to score. Corrin Genovese reached second base on an error by the Sooner right fielder and subsequently moved to third on a wild pitch by Ricketts. Mackenzie Sykes singled to score Genovese and bring the Tigers within one run. The Tigers would only get two hits for the rest of the game.

Thomas allowed no hits after the third inning, but it would not be enough for her to earn the win. Thomas allowed a total of four hits in her six innings of work, with just four strikeouts.

Missouri falls to fourth place in the Big 12, while Oklahoma remains in the lead. The Tigers have just two more conference series this season; they take on Iowa State in Ames, Iowa Friday, April 27 at 4 p.m. and will end the season playing at home against Oklahoma State starting May 11.
