Athletic department quiet because they never expected freshman PG Phil Pressey to transfer, says spokesman Chad Moller

Mizzou head coach Frank Haith announced today that current freshman point guard Phil Pressey intends to remain with the team for the upcoming season, according to KOMU’s Eric Blumberg.

Haith reportedly announced the news during a gathering for the student body to meet the new head coach at the MU Student Center today. A student in attendance tweeted the information during the event, held in the northwest corner of the Student Center alongside Mort’s Grill in “The Shack.”

Sports Information Director Chad Moller said in a phone interview with KBIA that the athletic department would not release any official statements about Pressey’s intentions. Despite rumors that the point guard might transfer, internally the athletic department anticipated that he would remain with the Tigers, Moller said.

Questions about the younger of the two Pressey brother’s plans for the future have persisted since the departure of Mike Anderson to become the head coach at Arkansas.

A pest on defense who mixes his small stature with explosive athleticism and Marcus Denmon-like range as a shooter, Pressey posted relatively average numbers in his first year with the Tigers. Hampered by the lingering effects of an early-season finger injury, Pressey split time at point guard as a pure freshman with sophomore Michael Dixon Jr. last season.

With the ‘Flip’ rumors silenced, Haith and his staff assuredly have 90 percent of last season’s production returning.
