In an early exhibition of the 2011 Missouri Tiger football team, the defense held strong against an inexperienced quarterbacking corps, “winning” 17-9.

Redshirt freshman QB Tyler Gabbert looked the most impressive of the Mizzou gunslingers. The battle for the starting spot once the season begins in August has captivated Tiger fans ever since Gabbert’s older brother Blaine decided to try his luck on Sundays. Gabbert has the so-called starting nod early on, but the fact that the redshirt freshman scrimmaged against mostly second and third-string defenses while his second-string counterpart James Franklin faced a sizable portion of the projected starting defense bears keeping in mind.

After a solid defensive season last year, the defense appeared to be the stronger of the two units overall again this spring. Redshirt junior LB Zaviar Gooden made the marquee play of the day with an interception returned for a touchdown.
